Crisis
At MAB this year we are donating our Christmas lunch money to Crisis. Each one of our places will go to fund a place at Crisis instead, which provides a whole lot more than a meal. See here. CRISIS16.12.2011. 17:56
MAB Ecology Celebrates
We are celebrating our 1000th contract! A BIG THANKS to all of our clients and staff for getting us to this milestone. We hope to continue to build on our reputation as a local company offering excellent service as well as value for money. We are recruting a new member of staff as a bat ecologist, following Nicola's decision to change career.05.10.2011. 09:58
Bats: more NE guidance
Natural England have issued guidance to environmental consultants which confirms that we do not have the ability to sanction any activity that destroys a bat roost or resting place of a bat, whatever the significance of that roost. In other words, if a building has one common pipistrelle roosting regularly in the masonry, we MUST advise that demolition or any other works that would involve the loss of that roost is a 'licensable activity'. We do have flexibility when it comes to disturbance of bats, and therefore if we can ensure that the roost is retained, and the 'continuing ecological functionality' is maintained, this may not be licensable, providing it is done when bats are not present. Full details can be downloaded here: EPS News July 2011. Full guidance on what constitutes a roost or resting place can be downloaded from the following EU link: Article 12 guidance on species protection. Our role as professional ecologists is not only to survey for protected species, but also to interpret the legal implications resulting from a development or other action affecting protected species.13.09.2011. 09:45
Bat Survey Season - Last Orders!
It seemed like summer was just beginning, but already we are looking at the end of the active bat survey season. Young bats are starting to fledge. We will be surveying flat-out until mid-September, but our books are full until mid-August. We would advise anyone considering a planning application over the next 8 months to check whether they may need a bat survey. If a bat activity survey is needed, there is a long period of September to May when they cannot be done, so there are only a few more weeks to book until May 2012.12.07.2011. 23:19
Protected Species Guidance
Natural England have published their latest guidance on European Protected Species licensing as it relates to the Planning process. The guidance is very clear and informative, especially in terms of addressing the responsibilities of the Planning Authority. You can download a copy by clicking on the following link.
